Plant Terminology Guide: Essential Plant Science Terms Every Gardener Should Know

Whether you're a new gardener, shopping for plants, or reading care instructions, you've probably come across words that sound confusing. What does herbaceous mean? What's the difference between a shrub and a tree? And what exactly is a sepal?

This beginner-friendly guide explains the most common plant science terms in simple language. By understanding these definitions, you'll be more confident choosing, planting, and caring for your plants.


Herbaceous

A herbaceous plant has soft, green stems instead of hard, woody ones. Most herbaceous plants die back to the ground at the end of the growing season and regrow from their roots the following year if they are perennial. Most annuals and perennials are herbaceous in nature. To make it even more confusing, some plants such as Hydrangea macrophylla have both new, herbaceous stems and what we call 'old wood', which is a woody stem that has been through a winter.

Woody

A woody plant develops hard, durable stems covered in bark. These stems remain above ground year after year and continue to grow larger over time.

Examples include: Pine tree, Cherry tree, Yew, and Lilacs

Deciduous

Deciduous plants lose their leaves during a specific season, usually in autumn. They grow fresh leaves again when the next growing season begins in spring.

Examples include: Sugar Maple, Black Oak, Hydrangeas, and Magnolia

Evergreen

An evergreen keeps its foliage throughout the year instead of shedding all of its leaves at once. Individual leaves or needles eventually fall, but the plant remains green year-round.

Examples include: Holly, Boxwood, Rhododendrons, Balsam Fir and Eastern white Pine trees

Conifer

A conifer is a plant that usually produces cones instead of flowers and typically has needle-like or scale-like leaves. Most conifers are evergreen, although there are a few exceptions.

Examples include: Pine, spruce, fir, and ginkgo

Petal

A petal is one of the colorful parts of a flower. Petals attract pollinators like bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds.


Sepal

A sepal is the small, leaf-like structure that surrounds and protects a flower bud before it opens. Together, all the sepals form the calyx.


Bract

A bract is a modified leaf located just below a flower or flower cluster. Some bracts are brightly colored and are often mistaken for petals.

Example: The colorful parts of poinsettias are actually bracts as well as flowering Kousa Dogwood 'flowers'.


Stamen

The stamen is the male reproductive part of a flower. It produces pollen, which is needed for fertilization.

The stamen consists of:

  • Anther: Produces pollen.

  • Filament: Supports the anther.


Pistil

The pistil is the female reproductive part of a flower. It receives pollen and contains the ovary, where seeds develop after pollination.

The pistil includes:

  • Stigma

  • Style

  • Ovary

Leaf

A leaf is the primary structure where plants make food through photosynthesis. Leaves capture sunlight and exchange gases with the air.

Leaves vary greatly in shape, size, texture, and color depending on the species.


Leaf Margin

The leaf margin is the edge of a leaf. Botanists often use leaf margins to identify plant species.

Common leaf margins include:

  • Smooth (entire)

  • Serrated

  • Toothed

  • Lobed

  • Wavy

Chlorophyll

Chlorophyll is the green pigment inside plant cells that absorbs sunlight. Plants use chlorophyll during photosynthesis to convert sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide into energy.

Without chlorophyll, plants couldn't produce the food they need to grow.


Branch

A branch is a woody extension that grows from the trunk or another branch. Branches support leaves, flowers, and fruit while helping the plant spread outward and transporting water and nutrients to the leaves.


Root

The roots anchor a plant in the soil while absorbing water and nutrients. Many plants also store energy in their roots for future growth.


Stem

The stem connects the roots to the leaves and flowers. It transports water, nutrients, and sugars throughout the plant while supporting new growth.

In woody plants, stems start out small and become trunks and branches.


Node

A node is the point on a stem where leaves, buds, branches, or flowers grow. Understanding nodes is important when pruning or taking plant cuttings because new growth typically emerges from these points. Also very important during pruning.

Planting Depth

Planting depth refers to how deep a plant's roots or root ball should be placed in the soil.

As a general rule:

  • Plant the root ball level with or slightly above the surrounding soil.

  • Planting too deeply can cause root rot and poor growth, as well as root growth on the root flare which can lead to tree decline/death

  • Planting a tree or shrub too high in the ground or a container may expose roots to drying out, as well as creating an unstable surface for the tree or plant and can lead to decline/falling due to improper root development.

Always follow planting recommendations for each plant species- plants like roses and tomatoes are special and can actually benefit from being planted a little deeper.


Annual

An annual completes its entire life cycle in one growing season. It grows from seed, flowers, produces seeds, and dies within a single year.

Annuals provide long-lasting blooms but usually need to be replanted each season.

Examples include: Marigolds, zinnias, petunias, and sunflowers


Perennial

A perennial lives for multiple years. While the top growth of perennials may die back each winter, the roots survive and get bigger over the winter and produce new growth every spring.

Perennials often become larger and fuller over time. As a general rule of thumb, it takes at least 3 years for a newly planted perennial to grow to mature size.

Examples include: Coneflowers, Hostas, Daylilies, and Lavender


Shrub

A shrub is a woody plant with several stems growing from the base instead of one main trunk. Shrubs are generally shorter than trees and are commonly used in landscaping.

Examples include: Azaleas, Boxwoods, Cotnius, and Spiraea


Tree

A tree is a woody plant that typically has one main trunk with supporting branching and leaves. Trees can be deciduous or evergreen depending on the species.

Examples include: Red Oaks, Sugar Maples, Japanese Maples, Birches, Magnolia, and Ginkgo
